Type of Collaboration:

  • Setting up of Marconi ATM Training Centre at MMU


  • Objectives:

  • To set up a training centre in FET, i.e. a regional training centre to run Marconi sanctioned training courses.
  • To train at least 40 Marconi clients in ATM courses for the next 12 months.


  • End-Product:

  • Setting up of Marconi ATM Training Centre worth RM1,500,000.


  • Detailed Description:

    Marconi has donated ATM switches and equipment worth RM1,500,000 for setting up of Marconi ATM Training Centre in FET. Two FET staff have been trained in Marconi Training Centre in Hong Kong and have obtained trainer's status.



    To date, MMU has benefited in the following:



    I) Donation of Equipment:

    The equipment available in the training centre is:

  • ASX-200BX (3 units)
  • LE-155 (3 units)
  • ES-2810 (3 units)
  • ES-3810 (3 units)
  • ESX-2400 (3 units)
  • PC Workstations (6 units)
  • UNIX Workstations (6 units)
  • PC ATM adapters (6 units)
  • UNIX ATM adapters (6 units)
  • PC Ethernet adapters (6 units)
  • UNIX Ethernet adapters (6 units)

    The equipment is grouped into 3 stations. Each station consists of:

  • ASX-200BX (1 unit)
  • LE-155 (1 unit)
  • ES-2810 (1 unit)
  • ES-3810 (1 unit)
  • ESX-2400 (1 unit)
  • PC Workstations (2 units) - equipped with ATM and ETH adapters.
  • UNIX Workstations (2 units) - equipped with ATM and ETH adapters.

    II) Courses offered

    a) ATM Theory (1 day).

    Objectives:

    On completion of the course, delegates will be familiar with the concepts of ATM Cells, ATM Switching, Interfaces, Applications and Management.



    Entry Requirements:

    Some background knowledge of Packet Switching would be useful.



    Course Content:

      ii) ATM Technology Status
      iii)ATM Implementation Status
      iv) Overview of LAN Emulation
      v) Ethernet LAN Emulation In Action
      vi) Source Routing Over An Emulated Token Ring In Action
      vii)Distributed LANE In Action

    Who should attend: Engineers and Managers without prior knowledge to ATM



    b) ATM Core Products Certification (5 days)



    Objectives:

    On completion of this course, participants will be Marconi certified LAN engineers and will be able to:

  • Install and configure Marconi ATM Core Switches.
  • Backup and restore customer databases
  • Perform ATM switch hardware maintenance
  • Perform ATM switch software upgrades
  • Perform ATM switch diagnostics and troubleshooting
  • Set up and deploy a boot server
  • Create policeable network connections (PVC and SPVC based)
  • Configure ATM switch-based LANE services (both server and client)
  • Perform network troubleshooting

    Entry Requirements:

    Participants must be equipped with internetworking skills including: Conventional LAN topologies, basic networking terminology, and IP protocol. Successful completion of an ATM Theory course, or equivalent skills is assumed.

    c) ATM Edge Products Certification (5 days)



    Objectives:

    On completion of this course, participants will be Marconi certified LAN engineers and will be able to:

  • Install and configure Marconi ATM Edge Switches.
  • Perform ATM switch hardware maintenance
  • Perform ATM switch software upgrades
  • Perform ATM switch diagnostics and troubleshooting
  • Perform network troubleshooting

    Status of Collaboration: The centre has been fully operational since December 2000.



    Products Achieved (publications/postgraduate candidates/funding/patent etc.):

    This centre has conducted a few training sessions over the past 12 months and a total of 41 Marconi staff and clients have been trained (including those attending ATM Theory Course). The details are listed below as the activities of this centre.
